Personal in the sense that as an ATM user myself, i need to know everything about ATM securities ,particularly as regards the safety of my bank account attached to the ATM cards .Impersonal because, as internet surfing addict, i read many stories of ATM scams in abroad where this ATM technology was imported to Nigeria and no sooner i returned back to Nigeria from my online trips to western world of ATM frauds courtesy of internet airline., i paid visits to some cyber forums in Nigeria to read what is happening back home .And what did you think i see? Friend, my curiosity for the need of ATM fraud prevention information not only for me but also for members of the public was confirmed by cry of agony of some victims of ATM scams posters. I will reproduce two of such here for your to digest:

CRY 1

“ Believe this o, it is real, very real. Let me explain , this happened to my very close friend. Someone somehow got to know is password[PIN NUMBERs] and card number, got another card from God knows where and drained all his money in the account. On getting to the bank to complain, they made him look like a confused guy , because they kept on telling him he withdrew the money himself, they even told him the particular ATM machine, the day and time. The annoying part is that it was on valentine’s day it happened, when boys were busy drinking garri in the hostel, so beware, ATM cards are not secure as they seems.” Source: www. nairaland.com

CRY 2

“ This is a serious case[ATM FRAUDS] as it happens to my wife and she fell for the scam before you know it they have withdrew money from her account by using the information to purchase things online. Let everyone be aware as this criminals are bent to give us bad name in this country. They should also know that if they did not stop this nefarious act the hand of the law will soon catch up with each and every one of them.”
Source: www. internetmarketingnigeria.com

So having read, heard and being told relatively similar stories, I decided to research into ATM card safety. In the course of searching I discovered that the ATM industry in Nigeria comprises of banks, independent deplorers of ATM, e-payment switching company[networking] and e-payment regulatory body. In addition, I realized the unrelenting efforts each of these companies are putting in place all in a bid to giving maximum security to ATM card users in Nigeria. For instance, the e-payment regulatory body in Nigeria, the CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA {CBN} has ordered all the banks and card providers in the country to move from the magnetic stripe protected ATM cards which are still largely in circulation to a more advanced electronic chip protected ATM cards. December 31, 2008 deadline was slated to phase out magnetic stripe cards to more secured micro chips cards. But unfortunately, most people are still parading the insecure and stone age magnetic stripe ATM protected card. At this juncture, I strongly advice you to leave this report now and go to your bank for information on how to change your card to a verve chip protected ATM card. This single step can give you 80% ATM safety.

Also, contrary to some people fear that the ATM machines and cards are not secure and safe, I find out that one should not give room to such fear, because according to the Global ATM Security Alliance {GASA} that .0016% of all ATM transactions worldwide are affected by crime or fraud.

In addition, I observed that many ATM card users are not aware of proper use of ATM facilities, particularly their own duties to maintain the security and privacy of their ATM personal information details, many methods criminals perpetrate ATM frauds aside from telling someone your PIN numbers and inability to differentiates between ATM ERRORS and ATM FRAUDS. Hence, the publication of this booklet.

As you read and apply it, I pray and wish you problem free ATM transactions life, amen.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello reader, you can support this campaign to stop ATM frauds in Nigeria by SENDING this website to your friends who are ATM user.It is well.

Specific Fraud Methods And Prevention Tips

FRAUD METHODS AND PREVENTION TIPS

1] WEBSITE SPOOFING OR PHISHING- Where a criminal sets up a fake website which looks authentic to the victim to be. This can also be accomplished by sending fraudulent snail mail,e-mail and sms with a link to a fake website form where a victim to be will be requested to fill in his ATM card number, PIN, and other identity information which shall be used to reproduce a fraudulent card to used on an ATM machine or shopping online.

PHISHING PREVENTION TIPS

i] Never respond to any snail mail,e-mail, sms and phone call requesting you to change or update your ATM details and Banking personal information.

ii] If you receive any message regarding your ATM and Banking details via snail mail,e-mail,sms and phone call specifically requiring you to change or update your data ,ignore it and go to your bank or card provider for confirmation.

2] SHOULDER SURFING-Where criminals look over the ATM user’s hands as they enter their PIN and then pickpocket or steal the card using distraction techniques.

SHOULDER SURFING PRVENTION TIPS

i] Check that other individuals on the queue keep an acceptable distance from you. Be on the look out for individuals who might be watching you enter your PIN.

ii] Stand close to the ATM and shield the keypad with your hand when typing in your PIN [you may wish to use the knuckle of your middle finger to key in the PIN]

iii] Scan the whole ATM area before you approach it .Avoid using the ATM altogether if there are any suspicious looking individuals around or it looks too isolated or unsafe.

iv] Avoid opening your purse, bag or wallet while in the queue for an ATM transaction. Have your card ready in your hand before you approach the ATM.

3] CARD SKIMMING-This is a situation where an illegal skimming or card details reader object which looks like part of ATM equipment is attached to the machine . The illegal objects are used to copy ATM card security information on its magnetic stripe in order to reproduce the information on a fake card.

i] Where possible, use ATMs with which you are most familiar. Alternatively, choose well-lit, well –placed ATMs where you feel comfortable.

ii] If you are visiting an unfamiliar ATM machine that is not inside a bank, examine it carefully for any devices. Card skimming devices need to be glued or taped to the card reader‘s slot. Look for “extra” cameras beyond the basic and generally obvious ATM’s security camera.

iii] Do not force your card into card slot.

4] LEBANESE LOOP OR CARD WITH HOLDING- A length of substance is inserted into the card slot .The customers insert the card and the substance traps it. The criminal in this situation often stand behind the customers and when the machine refuses to give up the card and the customer is pressing various buttons, the criminal will suggests that the victim enter their PIN number twice or more as this has happened to them before. The victim does this watch by the criminal and when they don’t receive their card back, the victim walk off to report it to his bank or card provider. The criminal will removes the device and card goes to other cash point or ATM to withdraw money. The other names for this are card jamming and trapping.

LEBANESE LOOP PREVENTION TIPS

i] Before you insert your card into an ATM machine, inspect the card slot for any residue .And if you see any strange object in the card slot, don’t use that ATM machine
and ensure you alert the authority concerned.

ii] If you think anything look suspicious or strange on the ATM machine or around it, report to the bank or police.

iii] Never accept or rely on the help of strangers to retrieve a confiscated card. Don’t press your PIN number in the presence of a stranger in the name of helping you to retrieve your card. They may be scammers themselves memorizing your PIN number.

iv] Report seizure of card immediately. If you can, don’t leave the machine spot [here you will need to have your bank or card provider customers or specifically ATM customers’care unit phone numbers]. Instead call your bank or card provider on the spot.

v] Never allow a bystander to call your bank customers’ care unit on your behave-they could be tricking you into thinking your card has been stopped.
vi] If you must use unfamiliar ATM machine, particularly the off-premises machine or can’t recognize any strange or card seizing objects, why not put your ATM card into the machine as if you are going to make a transaction, but before putting in the ATM PIN number, cancel the transaction so the machine spits the card out? This would help ensure that the ATM is not rigged or tampered with to seize the card. Also, it will ensure that you have not gone as far as feeding the ATM PIN number into the machine or gadget. If the card is stuck inside, at least the thief won’t have an ATM PIN number to use it.

5] CARD SWAPPING- Where a customer’s card is exchange for another card without his knowledge while undertaking an ATM transaction, usually after the criminal has distracted the card holder and successfully observed the victim PIN numbers.

CARD SWAPPING PREVENTION TIPS

I]Be especially cautious when strangers offer to help you at an ATM point, even if your card is stuck or you are experiencing difficulty with the transaction. You should not allow anyone to distract you while you are at the ATM.

ii] Never hurry when using an ATM .Make sure you are not distracted, intimidated or rush into transaction by anybody.

iii] Always be wary of strangers asking for or offering to help. While one distracts you, the other may be stealing your card and money.

iv] Always check that you get your own card back from the ATM.

v] Keep your hand over the card slot to make sure nobody can swap or take your card.

vi] Carefully secure your card and cash in your wallet, handbag or pocket before leaving the ATM.

6] MUGGING- Where a victim is physically attack while in the process of conducting an ATM transaction or directly afterwards.

MUGGING PREVENTION TIPS
i] Scan the whole ATM area before you approach it. Avoid using the ATM altogether if there are any suspicious looking individuals around or if it looks too isolated or unsafe.
ii] If it is late at night, try to use a machine that is well-lit and avoid dark, remote locations. Better still; avoid drawing cash late at night or when you are alone.

iii] Leave the ATM immediately if you don’t feel safe or you are suspicious of individuals loitering around. Come back later or use anther ATM.

iv] If you must use off bank premises ATM machine, do not count your cash in front of the ATM.

7] DIVERSION- When criminals affixed messages and signs to an ATM either to make the modification they have made in the ATM look less suspicious or to direct customers to nearby ATM which they have compromised. Such messages and signs could read as: “if your card get stuck, enter your Pin three separate times to retrieve it “, “Slide card here first ‘, “This machine is out of order, use the nearby one.” E.t.c.

DIVERSION PREVENTION TIPS

i] If there is notice on an ATM machine about entering your PIN number several times, do not use that ATM.

ii] Check for unusual instructions on the display screen and for suspicious blank screen. If you suspect that the ATM has been interfered with, proceed to another ATM and inform the authority in charge.

iii] Avoid ATMs which have messages or signs fixed to them indicating that the screen directions have been changed, especially if the message is posted over the card reader. Banks and other ATM owners will not put up messages directing you to specific ATMs, nor would they direct you to use an ATM which has been altered.

8] CASH TRAPPING- Similar to the Lebanese Loop where a thin sleeve traps your card, this time your cash is trapped by a sleeve or device put inside the cash dispenser. Your transaction will operate normally, but you won’t receive the cash you’ve withdrawn. Chances are either you will walk away assuming the machine is out of order or you go to your bank or card provider to lodge complaint. Either way, you have left the machine and the thieves can walk up, remove the device and your cash.

CASH TRAPPING PREVENTION TIPS
i] All the safety tips that are stated under Lebanese Loop are also applicable to this method. Only that in this instance, when checking at the ATM card reader’s slot, you will in addition inspect the machine cash dispenser‘s slot for any strange objects.

9] FAKE PIN PADS AND FAKE ATMS MACHINE- Fraudsters have designed fake PIN pads that they place on top of original ATM PIN pad. Unfortunately, with fake pads, your ATM transaction will proceed normally and you won’t know a scammer has stolen anything until it is too late. Though one has not heard this in Nigeria, yet we need to be security conscious. In some part of the world, fake ATM machines are being installed in and around shopping centers and other public locations. Upon placing your card into the card’s reader, these machines collect your ATM PIN and account information. They do not dispense cash rather, a screen comes up that says the machine is out of cash or out order.

FAKE PIN PADS AND FAKE ATMS MACHINE PREVENTION TIPS

i] Get in the habit of using the same ATM machine for your transactions. Become familiar with it and be able to recognize changes to the machine.

ii] If you are visiting unfamiliar ATM machine that is not inside a bank, examine it for devices, such as: card reader and cash dispenser slots, keypads and the whole machine itself. If anything looks suspicious leave it and go to another machine.

iii] Never force your card into card slot.

iv] If you feel the ATM is not working normally, press the cancel key and withdrew your card and proceed to another ATM, reporting the matter to your card provider.

10] DISTRACTION- You are standing at the cash point when you can feel close to you 2 or more people with mobile phones. They are tapping in numbers but really they are looking at your finger movements as you entering your PIN numbers. When all are put together they will probably have your PIN numbers. Thereafter, One of them taps you on the shoulder and tell you, you have dropped some money and on looking down you see a N200.00 note. As you bend down to pick it up, your card is ejected from the machine and one of the criminals pulls it out of the slot, put it through a skimmer and returns it to the slot just in time for you to stand up. Now, the die is cast, because they have your PIN number, the card details and will be put onto dummy cards to withdraw your money.

DISTRACTION PREVENTION TIPS

i] Do not use the ATM if there are suspicious-looking people around or if it looks too isolated or unsafe.

ii] Avoid opening your purse, bag or wallet while on queue for ATM transaction. Have your card ready in your hand before you approach the ATM.
iii] Be especially cautious when strangers offer to help you at an ATM, even if your card stuck or you are having difficulty with the transaction. You should not allow anyone to distract you while at the ATM.
iv] Keep your hand over the card slot to make sure nobody can swap, change or take your card.

v] Always check that you get your own card back from the ATM.

vi] Never be in a hurry while using an ATM machine and ensure you are not distracted, intimidated or rushed into your transaction.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello reader, you can support this campaign to stop ATM frauds in Nigeria by SENDING this website to your friends who are ATM user.It is well.

ATM General Prevention Tips

GENERAL PREVENTION TIPS

1] Never disclose your PIN to anyone, whether to family member, bank staffs or police.

2] Never use your date of birth, National identity card number, international passport number, driving license number or street address as a PIN number – those are the first numbers a fraudster will try.

3] Change your PIN after you must have collected it from the bank or card’s provider.

4] Change your PIN periodically, and, if you think it may have been compromised, change it immediately.

5] Regularly check your account balance and bank statements and report any abnormality or discrepancies to your bank or card’s provider.

6] Don’t use the ATM if the screen is blank.

7] Don’t throw away your ATM receipts at the ATM locations. Keep them to reconcile your account then dispose them properly when you get home.

8] Always make sure to remove or retrieve your ATM card from the machine when the transaction is complete.

9] Make sure nobody knows how much you withdraw.

10] Destroy old ATM cards immediately after receiving your replacement card.

11] Follow the instructions on the ATM machine carefully.

12] Only put in your PIN when the ATM tells you to do so.

13] If the ATM retains your card cancel it immediately.

14] Don’t lend your ATM card to anyone or share your password. And never write your PIN number on your ATM card or have it near your ATM card [in
The event that your wallet, bag get stolen].

15] Memories your PIN [if you must write it down, do so in a disguise manner and never carry it with your card]

16] Never be in a hurry when using an ATM. Make sure you are not distracted, intimated or rush into your transaction.

17] Never write your card details such as: PIN, card number, expiry date, e.t.c in your phone, so that if it gets stolen or loss your card will not be cloned or the details are used to collect your money from ATM or do shopping online.

18] If you are still using magnetic stripe ATM card, I advice you to switch over to more secured Verve chip ATM card today by requesting information from your banker on how to go about it.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello reader, you can support this campaign to stop ATM frauds in Nigeria by SENDING this website to your friends who are ATM user.It is well.

How To Operate ATM Machine

STEPS TO SECURELY OPERATES ATM MACHINE
STEP BY STEP OF USING ATM CARD.

1] Step1: Insert or put your ATM card into the card slot

Step2: Some machine will request you to insert your PIN, wait
for such time before you can put your PIN.

Step3:From this step, the machine will request from you if you
want to proceed .If so, press "YES", if otherwise, press "NO"

Step4:Here you will see different transaction options such as:
withdraw, inquiring, transaction, check balance e.t.c.

Step5:Assuming you intend to withdraw, press "WITHDRAW",
then you will see the following amount:N500, N1000,
N2000, N5000 e.t.c.

Step6:Press any amount you wish to withdraw.

Step7: After you are through with your withdrawal, you will
Continue transaction. If you want to continue press "YES"
if not, press "NO", that end your transaction.

Step8: Wait for your receipt any there is any , more importantly
Ensure you collect your own ATM card from the machine.

2] If possible always use the ATM machines of bank that issued your card.

3] Scan the environment for safety of transaction, card and cash dispenser slots, and the ATM screen message, how well lit is the ATM and non-attachment of strange objects.

4] Insert your card and press cancel to see if the card would be seized.

5] Before making a withdrawal, check your balance first. Why? If you can get your balance, that means connection to your bank server is currently active [I believe it’s also a way of refreshing the connection]. Then go on and make your withdrawal. If you can’t your balance, don’t try to make a withdrawal, you can’t be sure what the outcome will be.

6] Whenever you transact and any of these statements appear:” financial institutions not available.”,” hardware error.”, “your transaction can not be completed, your account has not be debited.” And other unsatisfactory messages don’t force it by trying over and over again. That is, don’t even try it for the second time, because the fact is all the communication is electronic- via the internet, so if there are network problems, data could get corrupted, your best bet is to cancel the transaction and remove your card. Wait some minutes or go to another ATM machine.

7] If you are to transact again either from the same machine or another one, start the operation again from step number [3]. The purpose of this is to prevent against cash dispensing error and card seizure problem.

8] If the ATM machine is displaying on its screen “Transaction processing”, wait until it completes even if is staying long. Because if you should remove your card and leave, the machine will dispense your money and your account debited.

9] Check your balance after withdrawing.

10] make sure you remove your card or wait for it to come out if you are using Wincor type ATM machine, so that you won’t forget it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello reader, you can support this campaign to stop ATM frauds in Nigeria by SENDING this website to your friends who are ATM user.It is well.

SEIZURE ERRORS

CASH AND CARD SEIZURE ERRORS

Most cash dispense and card seizure errors on ATM terminals are usually system related e.g when the internet link is sluggish or down or when your bank server is unstable or when there is no cash in the ATM machine, there will always be issues. However, it is the way the acquiring banks [the owner of the ATM] responds to dispense and seizure errors when they occur that separates the world class banks from the local banks.

The key here is quality of services. The industry standard is that dispense errors should not exceed 24 hours before they are corrected. In any case, most time when machine processes your transactions without paying you cash, it will re-credit your account within 24 hours, meaning by the following day when the bank server has been booted, all wrong debits to your account would have automatically be corrected.

Unfortunately, there are some that the system does not auto correct and for this you would have to sort it out manually with your banks or card’s providers as the case may be. The problem with manual correction is due to the fact that investigations would have to be carried out to ascertain the genuineness of your claims by getting confirmation from their head office, Interswitch or other member banks [if you use the card on another banks ATM aside from the one where your account is domiciled].If satisfied, the bank would credit your account back and the problem is that this may takes days or weeks before it could be resolved. In this instance, for your account to be timely re-credited or settled, you must lodge a complaint.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello reader, you can support this campaign to stop ATM frauds in Nigeria by SENDING this website to your friends who are ATM user.It is well.

ATM Transaction Errors

TIPS TO GET YOUR WRONGLY DEBITED ACCOUNT RE-CREDITED

1] Get in the habit of using your bank’s or card’s provider ATM machine.

2] Differentiate between dispenser errors, card and cash trapping fraud.

3] If it were to be cash trapping fraud, your card will get hook on card reader slot. In this case, call on the spot your bank or card provider as the case the may be stop further transaction on your account.

4] If it were to be card seizure error, it will swallow your card. In this instance, immediately lodge a complaint with your bank.

5] If it were to be cash trapping fraud, this when the ATM machine refuses to dispense money even after the transaction went smoothly. To be double sure it is a fraud check the cash dispenser slot for any residue, and if there is any, don’t leave the machine call your bank card provider and if the machine is within a banking premises, get the attention of the bank staffs.

6] If it were to be cash seizure error, to be sure of such, check your balance after every transaction irrespective of whether your transaction went smoothly or not. And if you found that your account has been wrongly debited, then quickly lodge an official complaint with your bank or card provider.

7] If you felt that the bank’s staffs are not treating your case with all seriousness, get to see the manager physically or by e-mailing that particular branch manager. Particularly,
Put this pressure on the bank where you have your account domiciled, irrespective whether this error occurs or else where.

8] If the response from the manager is not heeding positive result, gets in-touch with the bank headquarters via phone or email detailing your transactions and problem with their particular branch.

9] Better still you may choose to channel your complaint to the e-payment regulatory body, the Central Bank of Nigeria via : http://www.cenbank.org/contacts/contacts.asp. Well, most time when I visited cyber cafes I do see many people making payment online with their E-tranzact and Interswitch enabled ATM cards without been security conscious. It is not safe.

2] If you own a system and is connected to internet service, ensure you are protect against
Online scams by installing on your computer a good: firewall software, spy ware
blocking software and updated anti-virus software program.

3] Always check the website certificate and that it has a pad locked key at the bottom
right hand corner. Every ecommerce [a selling and buying website built to accept credit
And ATM cards] must redirect their customers to a HTTPS. Let me explain, when next
You are online visit www.ebay.com and pretend as if you want to make payment, you will
be redirected to a secure protocol i.e https://www.ebay.com ; notice the “s” after
“http”
That stand for secure and most of the scammers do not have it, even if they do, they can’t afford to have a certificate to hide their illegal activities.

4] Whenever you intend to use your Interswitch enabled ATM cards to make payment
online, ensure you are redirected to Interswitch website or better still go direct to the
www.interswitchng.com and go directly to the page where merchant websites are listed
and look for company you want to make payment to. Interswitch mandated all merchants
using their platform to accept payment to redirect their customers who are about to make
payment to their website.

5] If for any reason you buy stuff online or buy recharge vouchers and you don’t get it
[May be on a fake or dummy website or something of sort], immediately change your
PIN number and contact your bank or card provider.

6] If you must use cyber café to carry out online payment and banking, ensure to carry
out these operations:

a] check if the cyber café has anti-virus on the system, follow this route on the desktop go
to start-setting-control panel, then double click on ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS, you
will see a list of programs on the system among which anti-virus must be one if it is
there.

b] Check if there is keystroke logger software on the system [this software is normally
being downloaded by hackers on a system to gather unsuspecting browsers private data
Such as: PIN number, password, e-mail address, and other vital private information.
These will later be used by them to scam their victims]. Take these steps to uncover it:
go to the desktop on your system, from there go to start-setting-control panel, then double
click on ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS, this will show you some programs on the
system such as anti-virus, yahoo messenger e.t.c. So here you will need to look very well
for keystroke logger which may read as : password stealer, password killer or password
logger, click on it to highlight it and click remove and you are done. You may need to re-
start the system and when it comes up, go and look for the keystroke logger if it still
there. Better still, look for another system.

c] When you are in a cyber café to make online payment or do internet banking, make
sure no one is looking at your back and more importantly don’t accept or call anybody to help you make online transaction in a cyber café.

d] Whenever you transact with your ATM card or conduct internet banking in a cyber
café, make you always sign out of your account, because I do see some people leaving
their account without signing out after browsing.

e] Always avoid a cyber café operating night browsing sessions. Because of them are
being patronized by fraudsters and” yahoo yahoo” boys who might have installed identity stealing software on their systems.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello reader, you can support this campaign to stop ATM frauds in Nigeria by SENDING this website to your friends who are ATM user.It is well.

Nigeria ATM Institution Web Addresses

THE WEBSITE ADDRESSES OF INSTITUTIONS INVOLVE IN ATM
INDUSTRY IN NIGERIA

The reason why this section is being included is to familiarize the readers with the
authentic website addresses of the companies facilitating the ATM transactions in
Nigeria.
